Colonel John William Lauterbach, Jr. was born on October 7, 1924, in Borup, Minnesota and raised in Redwood Falls, Minnesota. He graduated from the Redwood Falls High School with honors and attended the University of Minnesota for one year of pre-med school. He subsequently received an appointment at the U.S. Army Military Academy at West Point in 1944 and was commissioned from that school into the U.S. Army Infantry in 1947. While in the Infantry, he was assigned to units in Germany, Taiwan and the United States. He then completed flight training and completed two combat tours in Viet Nam including one as a Battalion Commander. He is a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, KS and the National War College, Ft. McNair, Washington, DC.
